Nuclear Regulatory Commission

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s mission is to “protect public health and safety and the environment from the effects of radiation from nuclear reactors, materials, and waste facilities.” NRC regulates the Nation’s civilian use of byproduct, source, and special nuclear materials to ensure adequate protection of public health and safety, to promote the common defense and security, and to protect the environment. The NRC has responsibility for regulating the use of:

  • Source material (uranium and thorium)
  • Special nuclear materials (enriched uranium and plutonium)
  • Byproduct material (material made radioactive in a reactor that is used in the practice of medicine and industry, and residues from the milling of uranium and thorium).
