This session will familiarize participants with the objectives of the Radiation Oncology Practice Accreditation, the ACR-ASTRO Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards, and the actual process of obtaining ACR-ASTRO accreditation. The steps in the accreditation process will be reviewed, including the pre-survey documentation submitted with the application, the on-site visit activities and the final report contents. ACR-ASTRO surveyors review of a facility’s personnel, equipment, treatment planning and treatment records, as well as its quality control measures, are assessed during the survey. The benefits of ACR-ASTRO accreditation will be reviewed as well as common reasons for deferral of accreditation and the corrective action process.
ACRO Practice Accreditation
The American College of Radiation Oncology (ACRO) developed a Practice Accreditation Program (Program) in 1995, consisting of practice standards for radiation oncology. Accreditation is a voluntary process in which professional peers identify standards indicative of a quality practice, and an audit is conducted to assure that these standards are followed. Since its establishment, the Program has undergone periodic revisions to reflect clinical and scientific advances within the field, providing for the safe and effective practice of radiation therapy. The most recent review (in 2010) resulted in major changes to the process by introducing online case submissions by each practice, online review by disease site specific team members, and an onsite visit. The history and process for ACRO accreditation will be presented. In addition, state activities for requiring accreditation will be discussed. Finally, requirements to become a Medical Physics reviewer will be outlined.
