Dr Saul Hertz Discovers The Medical Uses of RAI

Exhibit Hall A Entrance
Sunday - Wednesday 7:00am - 6:30pm
Thursday 7:00am - 3:00pm

Stop by to see the groundbreaking contributions of Saul Hertz to the uses of radioactive iodine in the treatment of thyroid disorders. Hosted by the AAPM History Committee, the display features photos, handwritten data charts and other items collected by Barbara Hertz in honor of her father.

MGH's,Dr Saul Hertz was the first and the foremost to develop the experimental data of the medical uses of radioiodine (RAI) and apply it in the clinical setting. In early 1941, Dr. Hertz treated the first patient for thyroid disease with MIT cyclotron produced radioactive iodine. This seminal event marked the birth of radioiodine therapy and the field of targeted radionuclide therapy which is seeing a rebirth some 75 years later. This presentation will follow the events in both physics and medicine that led up to Dr. Hertz spontaneously asking the seminal question, “Could iodine be made radioactive artificially?” These include the association of iodine with thyroid function, the understanding of radioactivity in general and later the ability to produce artificial radioactivity. Lastly, the tracer principle will be discussed in the context of radionuclide therapy. The experiments necessary to demonstrate the potential for this new therapy will be featured, as well as the academic and political challenges that Dr. Hertz overcame to bring his work to fruition.
