Career:
William R. Hendee Ph.D. is Distinguished Professor of Radiology, Radiation Oncology, Biophysics, and Community and Public Health at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He is also Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Marquette University, Adjunct Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, and Clinical Professor of Radiology at the University of New Mexico. He has been at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) for over 17 years, and during that time has served as President of the MCW Research Foundation, Senior Associate Dean for Research, Dean of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, Vice Chair of Radiology, and Interim Dean of the Medical School. Over this period the Graduate School grew from 102 to 562 students, and the College’s extramural research funding expanded from $26.5M to $140M. In 2005 he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Medical College.
Prior to joining the Medical College of Wisconsin, Dr. Hendee was Vice President for Science and Technology at the American Medical Association (AMA) and Executive Secretary of the AMA Council of Scientific Affairs. During this six-year period he held a faculty appointment as Adjunct Professor of Radiology at Northwestern University School of Medicine. Preceding his AMA appointment were 20 years spent at the University of Colorado, including nine years as Professor and Chair of the Department of Radiology. After receiving the PhD degree from the University of Texas under the mentorship of Drs. Jack Krohmer, Fred Bonte and William Zebrun. Dr. Hendee began his professional career by chairing the Department of Physics and Astronomy at a four-year liberal arts college.
Dr. Hendee has authored or edited more than 20 books on topics ranging from the physics of imaging and radiation therapy to the perception of visual information and the health of adolescents. His texts Medical Imaging Physics - 4th edition – (written with a former postdoctoral fellow) and Radiation Therapy Physics - 3rd edition – (written with a former graduate student and with his son Eric), are widely used textbooks in medical physics. His two-volume Biomedical Uses of Radiation (1999) is a standard reference text distributed widely around the world, and his The Health of Adolescents (1991) was a pioneering work in an area of emerging concern. His Advances in Medical Imaging – volume 1 (co-authors Anthony Wolbarst and Robert Zamenhof) was published in 2006, and volume 2 of the series will be published in 2008.
Dr. Hendee has published over 400 peer-reviewed papers focused principally on the physics of medical imaging and radiation therapy, but also on topics such as education and certification in radiology, medical physics and radiation oncology; health physics; patient safety and healthcare quality; research ethics; medical informatics and biotechnology; technology assessment; medical administration and reimbursement; adolescent health; technologies for persons with disabilities; HIV infection and AIDS; and physical fitness. In 1984 Dr. Hendee was awarded the Yearbook Medal for Distinguished Contributions to the Medical Literature. He has been asked to fill named lectureships for many organizations and institutions, and has given invited lectures in Europe, North America, South America, Australia and Asia.
Dr. Hendee has served in various capacities for many of the scientific and professional organizations supporting radiology and medical physics. He has been president of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine, Society of Nuclear Medicine, American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering, and American Board of Radiology. His current professional activities include serving on the Governing Board of the American Institute of Physics; Board of Directors of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine; Publications Committee (chair) and Executive Committee of the International Organization of Medical Physics (IOMP); International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IOMP representative); International Atomic Energy Agency (expert consultant); and the European Medical Imaging Technology e-Encyclopedia for Lifelong Learning (EMITEL).
Dr. Hendee has had extensive involvement with the Radiological Society of North America, including a 5-year term on the Research and Education Foundation Board of Directors. Other RSNA committee appointments include Program, Review Course, Outstanding Researcher and Educator of the Year, Centennial Futures, Research Development, Public Relations, Stauffer Award, and Educational Materials. In 1989 he was an RSNA Diamond Anniversary Lecturer.
Dr. Hendee has served as associate editor for many scientific journals, including Radiology, Journal of Nuclear Medicine, Journal of Nuclear Medicine Technology, Academic Radiology, International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology and Physics, Journal of Optical Engineering, Encyclopedia of Imaging Science, IEEE Transactions on Information Technology in Medicine, Cancer Prevention International, Medical Progress through Technology, Current Opinion in Radiology, Radiographics, YearBook of Radiology, Health Physics, Investigative Radiology, PoisonIndex, Applied Radiology, Journal of Clinical Ultrasound, American Journal of Roentgenology, and Medical Physics. He is currently the Editor-in-Chief of Medical Physics.
