NAME: Herbert William Mower
OCCUPATION: Medical physicist specializing in radiation oncology
BORN: May 6, 1943 in Somerville, MA
EDUCATION:
BS in Electrical Engineering from MIT, June 1965
MS in Electrical Engineering from MIT, June 1967
EE in Electrical Engineering from MIT, February 1968
Sc.D. in Electrical Engineering from MIT, February 1972
CERTIFICATIONS:
ABR certification in Therapeutic Radiological Physics, June 1983
ABMP certification in Radiation Oncology Physics, August 1990
ABMP recertification in Radiation Oncology Physics, 2000
CAREER:
I started my career as a graduate student in 1966 in the High Voltage Research Laboratory at MIT in a cooperative program with the Lahey Clinic of Boston utilizing Van de Graaff accelerators as a source of photons and electrons for the treatment of cancer patients. My training and early work experience was under the mentorship of Dr. John G. Trump and Kenneth A. Wright, two charter members of the AAPM. In 1975 I joined the staff of the Tufts – New England Medical Center where my therapy physics responsibilities expanded to include the physics related a 45 MV betatron, supervision of a medical physics residency program, and the coordination of the physics training program for the radiation oncology residents of Tufts and well as the dental residents at the Tufts Dental School.
In 1978 I joined the staff of Shoss Radiological Associates, later to become Ridings Radiation Oncology Associates where I designed the new radiation therapy department for Southeast Missouri Hospital. Following five years in Cape Girardeau I joined the staff of Danbury hospital where my responsibilities included all of the medical physics aspects of the diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine and radiation therapy departments. Special activities included the radiation safety and measurement activities of the Hospital’s Dental Clinic and participation on the faculty in the radiation technologist’s school. During that time I oversaw the development of the radiation oncology department in the new cancer center.
In 1990 I returned to the Lahey Clinic Medical Center with special emphasis on bringing their HDR program on line and developing their stereotactic radiosurgery program. Presently I am the Director of Radiation Therapy Physics for the Clinic overseeing all aspects of the physics program therein.
