Career
I was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota but left shortly thereafter and spent an ideal childhood in Anchorage, Alaska. This experience has had a profound impact on many aspects of my life. I returned to Minneapolis for college where after a terrible experience in first year physics, I majored in physics and math. Upon graduation, I left the Minnesota for a climate more conducive to year round outdoor activities, first to Davis, California where I received a master’s degree in physics, and subsequently to Los Angeles, where I received a Ph.D. in Biomedical Physics from UCLA in 1996. I was appointed assistant professor at UCLA shortly thereafter followed by promotion with tenure to associate professor in 2000, and to full professor in 2004. Following the retirement in 2001 of Dr. James Smathers, an outstanding mentor and role model, I assumed the positions of Vice Chair and Director of Medical Physics in the Department of Radiation Oncology In this role I directed 9 staff and faculty physicists as well as several support individuals. Additionally, I served on the faculty of the UCLA Biomedical Physics Graduate Program, directing the therapeutic medical physics subspecialty. To date I have served on the committees of 21 Ph.D students, chairing 11. Many former students have gone on to considerable success, including two who have been awarded NIH R01 grants. I was certified in therapeutic medical physics by the American Board of Radiology in 1995.
I believe strongly in commitment to professional issues and I participate actively in a number of organizations. I have served on the Board of Directors of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) and the Board of Chancellors of the American College of Medical Physics (ACMP). I was ACMP Chairman in 2006. I am the Deputy Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics, and I regularly review manuscripts the major journals in our field as well as abstracts for the ASTRO and AAPM annual meetings. I served as an ad-hoc member of the NCI Radiation Study Section on several occasions, chaired an NIH Bioengineering Research Partnership Special Emphasis Panel, and was a member of a P01 review panel.
I support activities that preserve our wildlife and natural resources for future generations.
