AAPM Report #53

Report #53 is designed for use during in-service education sessions with allied health workers such as nursing, housekeeping maintenance or security personnel who have no training in radiation and radiation effects, yet must be trained at regular periodic intervals. It can be employed as a text during the in service presentation or distributed to the attendees for future reference as a demonstration of the institution's commitment to ALARA.

The 24 page report is written at an elementary level in easy to understand language. The report briefly covers radiation and radiation units, possible sources of radiation, regulations and the meaning of radiation warning signs. Methods to reduce exposure are also included.

Special sections are devoted to the declared pregnant worker and risks due to radiation exposure. What to do and who to call in the event of problems are treated in a generic manner that is easily adapted to an individual institution's policies.
