America’s Finest City Welcomes You!!

San Diego SkylineThe San Diego Local Arrangements Committee welcomes the AAPM for a return visit to our city after a 30-year absence. Those of you who were here before will be sure to notice some differences. First time visitors will see why everyone wants to live in San Diego. We are looking for day time temperatures in the high 70’s, absolutely NO CHANCE of rain and one of California’s finest beaches (Coronado) only 2 miles from the Convention Center.

This will be the most “family friendly” venue in a long time. The world famous San Diego Zoo is only a short bus trip away (look for it in “Companion Tours). Seaport Village has a charming array of 61 shops and restaurants next door to the Hyatt Hotel and right on the beautiful San Diego Bay. Scenic Coronado and the Silver Strand Beach are only a short water taxi ride away. Shamu awaits you at SeaWorld San Diego, about 5 miles north of the Convention Center (another Companion Tour). Nearby Balboa Park offers wonderful museums and restaurants. And this will be the shortest distance from a major airport to an AAPM meeting site in history: only 10 minutes by cab (and NO departure tax!!).

The Night Out on Tuesday August 12th, will feature our own outdoor “Party on the Bay” at the site of this January’s “NFL Experience” preceding the Super Bowl. Embarcadero Park adjoins the Marriott Hotel marina and will feature food, beverages and an outstanding entertainment program under the starry skies of southern California. The AAPM 5K Run/Walk will assemble early Tuesday morning right behind the Convention Center and follow a flat, fast course along beautiful San Diego Bay.

This is truly the year of meetings in San Diego: the Super Bowl started it all in January, to be followed by the American Association of Neurosurgeons in April, the Roentgen Ray Society in May and the Health Physics Society in July, all leading up to the 45th Annual Meeting of the AAPM in August.

All of our meetings will be in the newly expanded San Diego Convention Center, with breathtaking atrium views of San Diego Bay, Coronado Island, and the Pacific Ocean. The meeting rooms and communications will be state of the art with wired and wireless access throughout the entire building. The Gaslamp Quarter of San Diego is across the street from the Convention Center, featuring 187 restaurants and 87 nightclubs. If you can’t find food or drink or entertainment, you just aren’t looking!!

New in 2003, the “Welcome Center” will be located in the front lobby of the Convention Center next to Starbucks and will replace the former “Hospitality Suite”. At the “Welcome Center” you will find information about tours, restaurants and attractions. As an added convenience, Internet Terminals and a message center will be available to coordinate plans with family, colleagues and friends. LAC reps can be found in this area for any other assistance required. In place of the Icebreaker Reception, please plan to join your colleagues and vendors at the Sun August 10th “Beer and Refreshment Break” in the Exhibit Hall. The Awards and Honors reception will be held early Monday evening.
