Deformable image registration, contour propagation, and dose mapping are becoming increasingly used in treatment planning, adaptive therapy, and treatment evaluation. Implementation of these techniques can differ in the details of the registration/mapping methodology, goodness-of-match metrics, and regularization techniques. It is important that medical physicists understand the underlying processes of the systems they are using so they can properly and safely evaluate and use the results. Toward this end, AAPM Task Group 132 “Use of Image Registration and Data Fusion Algorithms and Techniques in Radiotherapy Treatment Planning” has proposed the following recommendations to vendors of commercial systems:

1. Disclose basic components of their registration algorithm to ensure its proper use
2. Provide the ability to export the registration matrix or deformation vector field for validation
3. Provide tools to qualitatively evaluate the image registration
4. Provide the ability to identify landmarks on 2 images and calculate the TRE from the registration
5. Provide the ability to calculate the DSC and MDA between the contours defined on an image and the contours mapped to the image via image registration
6. Support the integration of a request and report system for image registration

Over two sessions, Partners in Solutions will present representatives from seven commercial vendors who will respond to these recommendations and present details of their deformable registration products.
