SU-I-GPD-E-4 (Sunday, July 30, 2017) 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM Room: Exhibit Hall

Purpose: Desire2Learn (D2L) is used as a learning management system for a medical physics graduate course. Students use the platform to do their homework, check their scores and attendance on-line and to discuss the problems they encountered during class.

Methods: The key features used in D2L learning management system includes: homework (quiz), course content, attendance, discussions, and awards, etc. Homework questions were generated using D2L for each lecture and the students can answer the questions on-line. The homework scores are graded immediately upon the submission of the homework and the scores are exported to the grades section of the platform. The time spent by a student to complete a homework is logged and can be used to analyze the study ethics of a student. The homework for a specific lecture is only visible for 1 week. An “Intelligent Agents” is set to send reminder emails to students who doesn’t finish a homework 4.5 hours before it is due. The class handouts were uploaded to the “content” page of the D2L and the time the student accessed the content is logged. Using this feature, the instructor will know who doesn’t read the on-line handout. The attendance data logged in D2L can be easily converted to bonus points.

Results: Desire2Learn (D2L) is used as a learning management system for a medical physics graduate course. Students can do their homework, check their overall score, discuss questions, or download the course handout online.

Conclusion: The D2L platform is proved to be an easy way to manage a Medical Physics graduate course. The homework scores are graded immediately upon the submission of the homework and the scores are exported to the grades section of the platform. Students can check their overall scores and their attendance on-line and discuss problems they encountered during class.
