Purpose: We developed a software platform SRPLAN which has integrated radiation treatment planning system and optical real-time navigation system to test the brachytherapy performance of a newly-developed snake robot.

Methods: This snake robot radiation platform SRPLAN incorporated a module-plugin design in software development with module functions of dicom image processing, dose planning and evaluation, real-time optical navigation. Each module is comprised of module GUI, module Logic and data management. Both medical raw data and visualization parameters are managed in a hierarchical form, and Logic and GUI observe data changes and process the change events. Forward treatment planning is adopted in this platform for the radiation snake robot. The radiation source as well as optical marker are located together on the fore-end of snake robot. As the snake robot moves, the platform reads and visualizes the position of the optical marker from optical location system in real time to navigate the radiation source.

Results: The platform realized the entire treatment planning and navigation workflow for the innovative brachytherapy technique of snake robot through individual modules of image access and visualization, image segmentation, radiation snake robot path planning, dose calculation, treatment planning evaluation and real time optical navigation.

Conclusion: The highly modular design platform has provided the radiation snake robot an extensible software platform, which can be easily extended with new function module plugin. The platform is beneficial for innovative brachytherapy technique research and experiments and quite suitable for the further study and update.
