Physics Labs for First Year Radiology Residents

Purpose: To familiarize first year radiology residents with radiographic and fluoroscopic equipment and the operation of this equipment

Methods: Residents attend a series of labs where they are familiarized with the components of imaging suites, operate the equipment, and make radiation output measurements with the goal of emphasizing material covered in introductory lectures covering technology and production of x-rays.

Results: Residents are able to see the equipment they have learned about in lecture. They learn to identify components, position equipment, set technique, and measure radiation. They learn the purpose of the operation of the two-position handswitch. They also learn about the relationship of output with technique, transmission with technique, and patient exposure with technique.

Conclusion: While radiology resident physics instruction includes the technology to produce images, resident physics curriculum often does not provide a formal hands-on opportunity to see, touch, and operate. After attending these labs the resident can identify components, understand the alignment advantages of stationary equipment, and better communicate with technologists, physicists, service and sales staff, and administrators.
