Purpose: To study use the cone beam computed tomography for external beam radiotherapy planning.

Methods: For this study 15 patients were selected whose CBCT images were taken. The chosen patients were of different sites. The CBCT images were taken with XVI ver.5.07 (Elekta, CMS). At the time of importing the CBCT images same CT-to-ED conversion file was used. All the contoured from the original CT were transferred to CBCT images after image fusion with Monaco V 5.11.01 planning station. The same plan was done on the CBCT images that was already done on the original CT images. After generating the plans the QA plan was made on 729 Octavius phantom. Gamma matching of the CBCT and QA plan in done with 3% / 3 mm, 3% / 2 mm, 2%/ 3 mm criteria.

Results: The average of gamma matching results for 3% / 3mm was 98.8 ± 0.88%, 3% / 2 mm was 97±0.15%, 2%3 mm was 95.6±0.29%. Also the IMRT factor for CBCT based plans are less with full PTV coverage.

Conclusion: The CBCT is used very well for the external beam radiotherapy planning as seen from the Gamma matching results.
