Purpose: A 9-field IMRT treatment plan with total 90 MLC segments is the common used radiation treatment plan for the head and neck cancer patients. The total time for delivering the treatment is ~13 minutes by using SIEMENS Artiste LINAC. The purpose of this study is to decrease the radiation treatment time for H& N patients. This study shows a method to optimize the total treatment delivered time for the H&N IMRT treatment plan delivered by SIEMENS Artiste.

Methods: To decrease the total delivered time, the treatment plan need to perform less treatment data downloading time, less beam fields, less total MLC segments and less total MUs being delivered. This study aims to reduce the total delivered time of IMRT treatment plan with the same as the original treatment plans’ acceptance goal criteria. The changes of the DVH is ignorable and acceptable. The Head and Neck patients are selected by M.D. All the treatment plans created by Philips Pinnacle3 TPS V9.10.

Results: The results show the total time of the 9-field treatment could be less 3 minutes with the same acceptance goal by loosening the target constrain and forced the total MLC segments less than 60. The total delivered time could be less 5 minutes by creating 11 beam fields treatment plan with the total MLC segments less than 33. It also could be reached by creating the 3 sequence composite IMRT treatment plan with different 9 fields’ beam-angle set and the total MLC segments less than 33 for each 9 fields plan.

Conclusion: The present work expands the understanding of the factors related to the total delivered time of IMRT plan creating by Philips Pinnacle3 TPS and delivering by SIEMENS Artiste LINAC. It demonstrates the method to optimize the total delivered time by changing the IMRT treatment practices.
