There has been in a growing interest in creating and using systems to support the application of Big Data for accelerating knowledge generation to improve the care of patients treated with radiation therapy Data generated as part of the treatment planning process is a fundamental component of Big Data efforts. However, variability is a major obstacle both to technical efforts for automating extraction and to interpretation of the data. AAPM Task Group 263 has developed a standardized nomenclature for structure names and dose volume histogram metric reporting to serve as a building block in Big Data. The nomenclature will be defined along with the allowable variations which were designed to be supported by any systems which are used for structure definition. The personnel, clinical, and software systems considerations which must addressed when migrating from no standard or a different standard will be discussed from a physicist and physician perspective. Finally, the potential benefits of standardizing in not just one clinic, but many clinics throughout the country will be presented in the context of the Veteran’s Health Administration.

This session will provide attendees with information about the TG 263 nomenclature, practical tips to implementing the nomenclature, and the benefits of standardized nomenclature.

Learning Objectives:
1. The standardized nomenclature for structures from Task Group 263
2. How to implement the proposed Task Group 263 nomenclature in a clinic
3. The benefits of transitioning to the proposed Task Group 263 standardized nomenclature
