Medical physicists are uniquely qualified to address patient questions and concerns related to the technical aspects of their care. The current training paradigm for therapy and imaging medical physicists produces analytical patient-care professionals with a propensity for problem solving. This training also instills a comprehensive understanding of the science and technology that dominate the fields of radiation therapy and diagnostic imaging. Expanding this education and knowledge to also include formal training in patient communication will allow medical physicists to further expand their scope of practice to include new patient-facing roles and responsibilities.

This two-day workshop is designed to be an exciting and engaging learning experience for medical physicists, where they learn and use prescriptive communication strategies to develop positive, professional relationships with patients. The training includes lectures, discussions, analysis of patient interactions, role playing exercises, and simulated patient interactions.
