2006 AAPM Summer School

Program Description:

Goals of the Monte-Carlo (MC)section of the Summer School

  • To introduce the MC dose calculation algorithm, and to show how it can be effectively and conveniently applied in conjunction with image-guidance to optimize the therapeutic ratio in radiotherapy planning and delivery.

To establish these goals, the MC-related course will focus on the following topics:

  • establish the clinical importance of the MC method in radiotherapy dose calculations
  • show how the MC can be used in conjunction with image-guidance to account for systematic and random patient motion in forward and inverse planning, and
  • provide guidance to clinical end users on the use of MC-based treatment planning systems via "hands on" experience.

Goal of the IGRT section of the Summer School

  • To give a practical overview of technologies currently in use for guidance.
Starting from patient model development for treatment planning, including recently developed technologies for localization, and spanning strategies for use of technology, this program will permit attendees to understand the scope of new technology for imaging, to be able to plan for acceptance and use of various IGRT systems, and to understand the tradeoffs of various imaging techniques and localization strategies.
Continuing Education Credits:

The Summer School program will be submitted for approval for continuing education credit by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs, Inc. (CAMPEP). We anticipate that for each hour of verified attendance, 1 MPCEC hour of credit will be awarded.

On-Line Continuing Education:

The AAPM has partnered with Blue Sky Broadcast to host educational courses on the AAPM website in the AAPM Virtual Library.

Presentations to be given at the Summer School have been selected for posting in the Virtual Library. Presentations posted in the virtual library will include: streaming audio of the speakers, transcription of the audio presentations, and slides of the presentations. Blue Sky CD ROM Order form.

Access to the AAPM Virtual Library is a service provided to AAPM members. AAPM members may earn continuing education credits for selected presentations posted in the Virtual Library by subscribing to the AAPM On-Line Continuing Education Program. Look for details on registering for the AAPM Virtual Library and information on the AAPM On Line Continuing Education Program.

Following the Summer School, CD Roms of the presentations can be purchased. Ask for an order form at the registration desk on-site at the University of Windsor.

NEW THIS YEAR: Proceedings on CD Rom:

Summer School registrants will receive the program proceedings on CD Rom, as well as spiral bound handouts of presentations.
