Annual Student Meeting: The Many Paths of Medical Physics

Sunday, July 31 • 9:30 am - 11:00 am

This year’s Annual Student Meeting consists of a panel of professionals who have pursued an education in medical physics and have since filled a variety of jobs. Our speakers include:
- Chief of Medical Physics at the Swedish Cancer Institute, Dave Shepherd
- Mobius founder and owner, Nathan Childress
- Sun Nuclear Scientist, Ken Ruchala
- MD Anderson Professor, Rebecca Howell
- FDA Director of the Division of Radiological Health, Robert Ochs
They will discuss the paths they have taken which led to where they are today and answer your questions.

WGSTR Student and Trainee Lunch: Core Aspects of a Medical Physics Education

Tickets are $10 per person. Space is limited. Registration deadline is July 6.

The Working Group on Student and Trainee Research and the Students and Trainees Subcommittee are hosting this lunch to foster a discussion on Core Aspects of a Medical Physics Education as they pertain to research in our field. Also in attendance will be various faculty representatives from within AAPM to review ongoing education initiatives aiming to foster student growth. Residency Fair

The AAPM Students and Trainees Subcommittee, in collaboration with SDAMPP, is hosting a Residency Fair. This event will provide students an opportunity to learn more about individual residency programs and how they are structured. Come meet program directors and current residents from CAMPEP programs across the country.

Career Expo

Sunday, July 31 • 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

The Student and Trainee Subcommittee is holding the first non-clinical Career Expo at the annual meeting. The purpose of this event is to allow students, trainees, and young professionals to talk to physicists currently working in a variety of roles at companies, government agencies and labs, and academic research. This is not meant to be a job fair, but rather a place to facilitate discussions about future career paths and roles that medical physicists fill outside of the clinic.

AAPM Students and Trainees Night Out: All-inclusive Experience at the DC United Soccer Game!

$35 per person; includes ticket to DC United’s soccer match and access to our own private room with buffet-style food and beverages!

DC United ArenaJoin us for our Annual Students and Trainees Night Out sponsored by the Students and Trainees Subcommittee! hosted on the 1st night (Sunday night) of the conference. This event provides attendees the opportunity to network with fellow students, residents, and post-docs. This year we have partnered with DC’s professional soccer team, DC United. We will attend the game and have exclusive access to the team’s Capitol View Club where they will provide buffet-style food options, beer, wine, as well as non-alcoholic beverages.

Getting There:
  • Use Metro - The Stadium Armory station is the closest station to the RFK Stadium (10 minute walk). From the Convention Center, take the yellow or green line to L'Enfant Plaza; change to the blue/gray or orange line to the Stadium Armory station.

    Follow the "to stadium" signs located inside the station to exit onto 19th Street. Follow the sidewalk around the DC Armory to East Capitol St. This will lead directly to the box office and Main Gate at RFK Stadium.

  • Share a cab: Taxi fare from the Convention Center to RFK Stadium is $22, including tip.

Some common items that are not allowed at RFK Stadium are umbrellas, coolers, and bottled water. See the full list of all prohibited items here.

ePoster Theater - Expanding Horizons

Awardees from the 2015 Expanding Horizons Travel Grant cycle will discuss their experiences traveling to conferences that are not specifically geared toward traditional medical physics, focusing on broad scientific impact and opportunities for medical physicists in various fields. The Expanding Horizons electronic poster session gives a venue for AAPM conference attendees to meet and discuss with awardees, learn the hot topics and emerging research areas presented at these conferences, and understand the relevance to future medical physics research. Students interested in applying for the 2016 application cycle are highly encouraged to attend!

Interview Workshop

The Students and Trainees Subcommittee (STSC) would like to invite students, trainees, and young professionals to attend an interview workshop to practice their interviewing skills and receive feedback from real interviewers. The first workshop is designed for those seeking careers in academic, research, or clinical environments. The second workshop is geared towards those seeking careers in regulatory or industry positions.

Fostering a Successful Career in Research

Interested in pursuing a career in research? Come hear from leaders in the field who have found success in academic and industry research careers. Challenges encountered in transitioning from graduate student to faculty member, securing the first grant, and moving into an industry research position will be highlighted and discussed.

AAPM New Member Symposium

As a new member of AAPM, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the size and complexity of the association and to be unaware of the benefits and opportunities available to members. At this year’s AAPM Annual Meeting, we will host a New Member Symposium where you can learn more about the organization, member resources, opportunities to get involved, and about topics of particular interest to new professionals. We encourage you to take advantage of this great opportunity to learn valuable information and to grow your professional network.

Following an introduction from Bruce Curran, AAPM President, you will be given an overview and general information about the AAPM organization. A discussion panel with follow, consisting of representatives from the 4 AAPM Councils: Administrative, Education, Professional, and Science. The panel will share their experiences serving within the AAPM and will answer questions from the Symposium attendees. The New Member Symposium is a (free) ticket option when you register online for the Annual Meeting.

Attendees registered for this event will receive a raffle ticket. Enter to win a complimentary registration for the 2017 Annual Meeting in Denver!

In addition, all new members who register for the Symposium will receive a drink ticket, good for one complimentary soda or beer served after the New Member Symposium during the social with committee chairs from the 4 AAPM Councils.
