Items of Note

Important notices, upcoming deadlines, and events happening in the Medical Physics community.

  • AAPM Monitoring Government Shutdown Impacts
AAPM continues to closely monitor the ongoing government shutdown—both its potential impacts on the work and research of our members and the broader implications for science and healthcare. At the same time, we’re engaging in discussions, collaborating with peer societies, and advocating directly to ensure that the voice of medical physics remains visible and valued during this period.

While shutdowns are complex and unpredictable, current guidance and past experience suggest several areas where temporary disruptions could occur.

  • AAPM Leads Joint Letter on CT Dose eCQM in CMS CY2026 HOPPS/ASC Proposed Rule
AAPM recently spearheaded a joint response to the CY2026 Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment System (HOPPS) and Ambulatory Surgical Center (ASC) proposed rule. CMS has proposed to indefinitely maintain the voluntary status of the electronic clinical quality measure (eCQM) titled Excessive Radiation Dose or Inadequate Image Quality for Diagnostic CT in Adults. This measure, originally finalized for voluntary reporting beginning in 2025, had been expected to transition to mandatory reporting by 2027. Following significant feedback from the imaging community, CMS has proposed to keep the measure voluntary.

AAPM, along with peer societies AAPM, ARRS, ASTRO, ASRT and SNMMI, expressed strong support for CMS’ decision to keep the measure voluntary, while highlighting ongoing concerns with the current construct of the eCQM. The letter emphasized that the measure, as designed, is not ready for mandatory implementation and could create undue financial and operational burdens without clear patient benefit.

AAPM acknowledges with gratitude the five peer societies that co-signed the letter, and we remain committed to advancing patient safety, imaging quality, and dose optimization through scientific rigor and collaboration. We will continue to engage with CMS, peer societies, and the broader imaging community to develop practical and meaningful measures that reflect the complexity of CT imaging practice.

Those with perspectives on the measure are encouraged to submit comments to CMS to ensure their voices are reflected in future rulemaking (Email CMS staff here).
