AAPM Task Group on Measurements of the 3D Image Noise-Power Spectrum in Computed Tomography
This Task Group is charged with developing standard methods for measuring the 3D image noise-power spectrum (NPS) of x-ray computed tomography (CT), emphasizing practical experimental methodology that is:
- applicable to a broad range of:
- CT scanner technologies (e.g., various implementations and combinations of single-slice axial CT, multi-detector CT (MDCT), helical CT, and cone-beam CT).
- detector technologies (e.g., single-row detectors, MDCT arrays, and flat-panel detectors)
- physical embodiments (e.g., slip-ring gantries, C-arm gantries, and experimental benchtops)
- applications (e.g., boday CT, breast CT, and CT angiography);
- mindful of general, theoretical considerations regarding the multi-dimensional image NPS as described by the parent Working Group, including:
- dimensionality and normalization of the resulting 3D NPS
- factors affecting correlation in the 3D volumetric image data
- factors affecting correlation in the 3D volumetric image data
- factors affecting stationarity of the noise and the applicability of NPS analysis
- extension to analysis of the 3D noise-equivalent quanta (NEQ).
A Task Group Report will be produced to communicate practical standards for CT NPS measurement. Sample code for implementing methods is highly recommended.
