CT Protocols are the foundation upon which the operation of a CT Imaging department is built. It is of vital importance for clinical physicists to have a comprehensive understanding of the role protocols play to ensure the proper imaging procedure is performed, the required image quality is produced and that the protocol is consistently implemented across a hospital system or imaging center. A variety of state and accrediting body regulations and standards along with recommendations from professional organizations and stakeholder groups are also important to take into account when reviewing CT Imaging Operation.

The role of the clinical physicist in CT Protocol Management and Operation will be addressed with a specific focus on efforts to standardize nomenclature and image quality amongst CT systems. Special considerations for developing protocols and safe guards for pediatric, bariatric and emergency department populations will be discussed and resources to guide development of patient population specific protocols will be introduced and reviewed. The role of Radiation Dose Index Monitoring (RDIM) software in the context of CT Imaging Operation will be reviewed with special attention paid to methods for a clinical physicist to use RDIM software to ensure consistent quality throughout the operation and how the systems can aid in protocol and exam Quality Assurance.

These lectures will provide an overview of the steps in the CT Imaging Operation workflow and focus on how a clinical physicist can impact each step to ensure quality and add value to the process.

2. Understand the issues related to developing CT Protocols for Pediatric, Bariatric and other patient populations and how to incorporate Imaging Gently and Wisely principles
3. Understand how Radiation Dose Index Monitoring Software can be incorporated into a comprehensive Protocol QA program and how it can inform the process of matching image quality across CT scanners
