Purpose: To provide a catalog of the spectra emitted by Mo-, Rh- and W-anode-based x-ray tubes, measured in the energy range from 10 kV to 50 kV, in steps of 1 kV.

Methods: A germanium detector was characterized for use as an x-ray spectrometer. The spectra were measured at a distance of 1 m from the focus of three different x-ray tubes which were equipped with W-, Mo-, and Rh-anodes. The exit windows consisted of 1 mm Be. The spectra were then measured for tube voltages in the range from 10 kV to 50 kV, in steps of 1 kV, without additional filter materials having been added. Furthermore, a selected number of spectra were measured to which layers of filter materials that are typically used in mammography (such as Al, Cu, Mo, Rh, Pd, and Ag) had been added. The spectra which had been measured by means of the direct method (i.e. the spectra which were measured with added filters) were compared with the spectra which had been obtained by means of the indirect method (i.e. with the spectra which were measured without added filters, but to which the filter had been added by computation).

Results: Mammographic x-ray spectra based on Mo-, Rh- and W-anodes measured by means of the direct method, and spectra that have been obtained by means of the indirect method agree sufficiently well that they are practically identical.

Conclusion: A catalog is provided of x-ray spectra emitted from W-, Mo-, and Rh-anode-based x-ray tubes in steps of 1 kV in the energy range from 10 kV to 50 KV. These spectra can be used to obtain x-ray spectra to which selected filter materials are added by computation. The catalog thus serves as a source of spectral information that is especially valuable for the field of mammography.
