Purpose: The contrast-detail (CD) phantom CDMAM 3.4, produced by Artinis Medical Systems, is widely used for image quality assessment in mammography. However, observation of the phantom images is time consuming and requires several human observers for objective assessment because there are intra- and inter-observer variations in quality assessment. Artinis Medical Systems provides their CDMAM Analyser software for automated analysis of phantom images. In this study, we aimed to develop an automated analysis program based on a different method for detecting signals.

Methods: The CD phantom images were taken by a computed radiography (CR) system (FujiFilm Co.). The distance between the X-ray source and the CD phantom was 65 cm at 28 kV. Images of various quality levels were prepared by varying the exposure (40, 50, 63, 80, 100, 125, and 160 mAs) with 4-cm-thick Plexiglas plates, which imitated the state of the breasts of a Japanese woman pressed against a surface. Five images were taken for each condition, and a total of 35 images were developed. The image quality assessments by our automated analysis program were compared with assessments by human observers and the CDMAM Analyser software. We used CD diagrams and IQFinv for image quality assessment.

Results: The IQFinv values from our automated analysis program were close to those of the visual assessment. There was a strong correlation (r = 0.89) between the assessments of the automated analysis program and the human observers. There was also a strong correlation (r = 0.86) between the results from the automated analysis program and the CDMAM Analyser software.

Conclusion: Since the assessments from the automated analysis program were similar to the assessments from human observers, the automated analysis program can be used as a substitute for a person when making an assessment.
