MPPG Report 10.b - AAPM medical physics practice guideline 10.b.: Scope of practice for clinical medical physics (2025)

Category: MPPG Report

This report is an update of MPPG 10.a1 published in 2018. This revision enhances clarity and scope for Qualified Medical Physicists (QMPs) in clinical practice. It introduces expanded roles in informatics reflecting the evolving landscape of clinical practice. The levels of supervision have been more refined to align with current national standards. The guideline introduces enhanced responsibilities in radiopharmaceutical therapy, including patient-specific dosimetry, treatment protocol development, and safety oversight for Y-90 microspheres and other radionuclides. These updates reflect the growing complexity of clinical workflows and reinforce the need for ongoing training and certification. The guideline affirms the QMP&rsuo;s central role in ensuring patient safety, regulatory compliance, and high-quality care across radiation oncology, diagnostic imaging, nuclear medicine, and MRI. Qualified medical physicists (QMPs, AAPM Position Statement PS 7-A2) are members of multi-disciplinary health care teams. As medical specialists, QMPs are dedicated to ensuring the safety of patients, medical staff, and the general public and improving the quality of care to ensure accurate diagnosis and treatment of disease. These outcomes are achieved through numerous and varied activities, many of which are outlined in the Appendix: Scope of Practice Combined Task List. The skills required to perform these tasks are uniquely obtained through the scientific and clinical training of a medical physicist. The appendix organizes tasks in imaging and therapy medical physics by categories, including administrative, clinical, educational, informatics, equipment performance evaluation (EPE), quality, and safety. Each task or activity indicates the AAPM’s recommendation on the involvement of the QMP: 1. Activity must be performed by a QMP 2. Activity must be performed or supervised by a QMP 3. Activity should include a QMP
