Effect of Room Temperature in Storage On Outward Bowing of Phantom Window

Purpose: In order to reduce uncertainty in measurement depth during calibration of radiation beams using a phantom for a horizontal-beam geometry, outward bowing of the phantom window owing to the water pressure on the inner surface was investigated under two types of room temperature conditions in storage of the phantom. The aim was to propose appropriate the storage of the phantom and seek suitable usage of the phantom.
Methods: Three phantom types were investigated (number of phantoms investigated appear in parentheses): PTW—type 41023 (2), Qualita—QWP-04 (2), IBA—WP34 (1). Using a dial indicator, center of the phantom window was monitored every 5 minutes for 60 minutes just after the phantom was filled, in a treatment room at our institution. Temperature in the treatment room was maintained approximately range of 21°C–23°C. Prior to the evaluations, five phantoms investigated were stored according to following two conditions: 1) a phantom was stored in the treatment room at the aforementioned temperature; 2) a phantom was stored in a warmer room at approximately range of 24°C–27°C. Water temperature in the phantoms during the evaluations were in good agreement with air temperature of the treatment room, within 1°C.
Results: The outward bowing behavior was different on following conditions: phantom type, phantom-to-phantom of the same type and the room temperature during the storage. In particular, the outward bowing at the time of phantom just filled were approximately 0.1 mm larger in the case of storage in the treatment room at about 21℃ than in the case of storage in the warmer room at about 25℃.
Conclusion: The authors conclude that the phantom owned in clinic is stored at approximately-same room temperature and evaluated the outward bowing behavior corresponded to room temperature in the storage before the calibration of radiation beams.
