Task Group No. 384 - Clinical implementation of automated segmentation for adaptive radiation therapy (ART) (TG384)

ActivitiesIt is the goal of this task group to develop guidance and provide recommendations for clinical commissioning, validation, implementation, and maintenance of artificial intelligence (AI) - based solutions that automate the tedious contouring process in radiation therapy (RT). This report is specific to adaptive radiation therapy (ART) in which anatomical and dosimetric variations are systematically monitored prior to treatment delivery. The following topics will be included in the report:
  1. Describe the clinical requirements and challenges in contouring, and the need for AI-based auto-segmentation.
  2. Review of the evolution of technologies facilitating automated contouring in radiation therapy (RT).
  3. Summarize of the current knowledge of AI-based auto-segmentation and the underlying deep learning neural network (DLNN) architectures.
  4. Provide recommendations for data requirements for training/re-training and validation/re-validation of AI-based segmentation models and tools.
  5. Summarize evaluation metrics for auto-segmentation and organ-specific criteria for different disease sites.
  6. Provide recommendations for validation, acceptance testing, commissioning, and maintenance of AI-based auto-segmentation tools.
  7. Provide recommendations for clinical implementation of auto-segmentation tools for adaptive radiotherapy.
  8. Provide recommendations for quality assurance (QA) of patient-specific auto-contours for adaptive radiotherapy.
  9. Identify clinical and data challenges, and analyze risks for clinical use of AI-based auto-segmentation.
