The goals of this task group are to assess the state of IT education in radiation oncology (RO), to increase awareness of the many areas of the modern practice of IT in RO, and to develop a curriculum for IT education in priority areas in RO. The increasing clinical adoption of automation and advanced technological systems in RO requires a conceptual understanding of the infrastructure, software, quality assurance and data science methods required to support these systems. Such an understanding will foster an environment that promotes patient safety while facilitating and encouraging further development and innovation in these transformative areas. The information provided in this task group report will serve as a foundation for medical physicists to perform hands-on IT tasks where needed, supervise personnel, manage IT infrastructure and, importantly, have a leading role in decision-making in areas including the implementation of single and multi-vendor systems, artificial intelligence, big data systems, clusters and cloud technology.
