Activities

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly emerging as a transformative technology in radiation therapy, medical imaging, and nuclear medicine. The charges to the Working Group (WG) include:

  1. Actively monitor and evaluate developments in generative AI algorithms, framework, and platforms to assess their potential applications in diagnostic radiology, radiation therapy, and nuclear medicine.
  2. Assess benefits and risks associated with the use of generative AI for research, development, and clinical care, while addressing the associated technological, ethical and regulatory considerations.
  3. Provide the Machine Intelligence Subcommittee (MIS) with expert advice and guidance on the safe and effective use of generative AI, and facilitate the MIS to work with the Data Science Committee (DSC) and Science Council (SC) to form specialized task groups.
  4. Identify and assess educational needs and leverage the expertise of group members and external advisors to organize meeting sessions and produce materials that inform and educate AAPM members about the opportunities and implications of generative AI.
  5. Foster communication and collaboration with regulators, industry stakeholders and professional societies (e.g., RSNA and ASTRO) to ensure alignment and bridge any gaps.
  6. Explore opportunities to apply generative AI in improving diagnostic and therapeutic care for underserved and underrepresented population and advancing medical physics training and practice in developing regions.
